International Women’s Day Circus Workshop

About the Workshop
To celebrate International Women’s Day, we are running a circus workshop called This One’s for You.
The workshop will involve an afternoon of fun physical activity and the learning of some cool circus tricks. The sessions are designed to be a wonderful decompress from hectic times, whilst allowing the participants to experience new and challenging ways of using their minds and bodies.
The session will be held in our space, part of the Ulverstone Sports & Leisure Centre, Flora Street, West Ulverstone.
About Mieke Lizotte
Mieke grew up in North-West Tasmania, beginning circus at age ten at Slipstream Circus.
At sixteen she moved to Melbourne to study at the Victorian College of the Arts Secondary School and the National Institute of Circus Arts. Mieke then moved to China to train at the Beijing International Arts and Acrobatics School. Since then, she has worked and toured full-time internationally and nationally as an independent artist, and with world-renowned Gravity and Other Myths, creating and performing award winning shows for many years.
Mieke moved back to Tasmania in 2020, taking on the role of Artist Development Program Coordinator. She now has a young family and is an occasional tutor.
About Slipstream Circus
Slipstream, established in 2000, is a self-funded charitable organisation that continues to thrive as Tasmania’s largest circus school. At any one time, SS has approximately 200 enrolled students, with classes on offer for three-year-olds up to adults.
Slipstream is a safe and inclusive place, providing alternative recreational activity for students who are not inclined towards sport. Circus involves a high level of physical challenge and activity as well as developing life skills such as confidence, trust and risk-management.
Circus and Gender
Traditional circus saw women performers relegated to certain activities and roles which reflected conventional societal norms.
Contemporary circus (the Slipstream Circus model) busts those myths, providing a platform for women to excel in all areas of the artform. At the elite level, circus women are celebrated for their strength, creativity and commitment to teamwork. Our region is incredibly fortunate to have Mieke, who has operated at that level, now residing here and available for these kinds of events. She is an enthusiastic and dedicated role model for women of all ages.
